How to Unplug This Summer

Let’s play a word association game.

Make a list of words you associate with summer. Here are a few that come to my mind: sunshine, flowers, vacation, nature, carefree, relaxation and happiness.

Do any of your words have to do with spreadsheets, emails or deadlines? I didn’t think so.

During these last few weeks of summer, I encourage you to take time to unplug. Dedicate a week, a weekend or even a day to rest. Rest does more than just rejuvenate your body and give you a break from your ongoing responsibilities; it increases your capacity.

Here are a few ways to unplug and get the rest you deserve before fall arrives:

Put the phone away – Go at least one day without checking your email and social media. You will be amazed how freeing it is.

Take a vacation – An international vacation is wonderful, but you don’t need to travel overseas or over the border to relax. There are plenty of places within driving distance where you can go to relax and recharge. Or, take a staycation and enjoy the time off in your home or hometown.

Enjoy life in micro phases – Find something that brings you joy and then recreate it on a smaller scale. For example, if you enjoy home décor, add a new piece that reminds you of who you are or where you are in life. (I recently used an app called Chatbooks to create a photo book using photos directly from my phone.)

Recommit to what matters – The goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year may or may not reflect your current needs and wants. Use this time of rest to find clarity on what you hope to achieve in the coming months.

It may be challenging, but it is so worth it!

Happy Summer~
